An equipment-related explosion during preparations for Greenville’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show on July 6, 2025, injured two adult men and prompted the cancellation of the display, authorities later confirmed.

Incident During Pre‑Show Setup

At approximately 11:45 a.m., two men were setting up pyrotechnic equipment for the evening show when one of the fireworks prematurely detonated. One man was treated at Wayne HealthCare, while the other was airlifted by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital for further treatment.

The president of the Darke County Fair Board confirmed to local media that the blast occurred during a pre-show test. Deputies and investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Darke County Sheriff’s Office remained on site. No arrests were made.

Show Canceled Over Safety Concerns

By early evening, officials had formally canceled the fireworks display scheduled for around 10 p.m., citing safety concerns and an abundance of caution.

In a statement, The Great Darke County Fair announced:

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Greenville fireworks scheduled for this evening have been cancelled. We understand how disappointing this news may be and truly appreciate the community’s understanding and support. The food trucks will still be on-site, so we invite everyone to come out, enjoy some great food, and support our local vendors.”

Fair organizers also noted that food vendors and other attractions remained open at the fairgrounds starting around 5 p.m., despite the cancellation of the pyrotechnics.

Investigation Continues as Safety Concerns Broaden

As of the end of July, local authorities had not released further information about the cause of the explosion or the outcome of the investigation. No rescheduling of the fireworks display had been announced.

The incident added to broader concerns regarding fireworks preparation and safety oversight at public events across Ohio. The State Fire Marshal’s Office later cited the Darke County mishap, alongside a sharp increase in holiday fireworks injuries statewide as part of a troubling trend that has raised alarms among fire safety officials.

State officials highlighted that the jump in incidents includes not only consumer mishaps but also professional-grade displays, reinforcing the need for stricter protocols and risk management.
