Spirit EMS has been named the Darke County Economic Development 2026 Business of the Year, recognizing the organization’s continued growth, leadership and service across the region.
The annual award honors a business that shows excellence in its field while supporting the local economy and improving quality of life in Darke County. Spirit EMS was selected for its commitment to medical transportation, workforce development and long-term community investment.
Darke County Economic Development Director Mike Bowers said the organization has stood out for its service to residents, healthcare providers and families across the area. “Spirit has distinguished itself through its unwavering commitment to providing reliable, high-quality medical transportation while supporting the needs of residents, healthcare providers and families across our region,” Bowers said.
Award Highlights Spirit EMS’ Service Across the Region
Spirit EMS has grown from a small operation with three ambulances and eight part-time employees into a regional provider with nearly 140 team members. Today, the organization operates six locations across Ohio and Indiana, with a fleet of more than 80 vehicles that includes ambulances, wheelchair vans and specialized response units.
The company provides emergency and non-emergency medical transportation for residents, families and healthcare providers. Its work has remained focused on dependable service, compassionate care and a personal approach to helping people during important moments.
Spirit EMS President and CEO Brian K. Hathaway accepted the award on behalf of the organization and credited the company’s team members for its success. The recognition also reflects the company’s long-standing connection to the community and its guiding philosophy of “our family taking care of your family.”
New Training Programs Strengthen Local Workforce Development
Along with its transportation services, Spirit EMS has placed a strong focus on workforce development. The organization has launched programs such as its EMT Boot Camp, Earn While You Learn EMT scholarship initiatives and partnerships with higher education institutions to help prepare the next generation of emergency medical professionals.
Spirit EMS is also developing the John and Iris Hathaway Education and Community Center, a project designed to expand training opportunities while giving the broader community a place to gather. The center is expected to open this summer.
“Designed with a barn-style theme rooted in our agricultural heritage, this center will be a place where new EMTs begin their calling and where community members come together,” Hathaway said.
Economic development leaders noted that local and state partnerships have helped move the project forward. For Spirit EMS, the award comes at a time of continued expansion, future planning and deeper investment in the people who support emergency medical care across the region.
